What is an Open Brain, exactly?
It's a structured knowledge base that lives inside your project repo. Think of it as a wiki that your AI can read and write to natively. You store decisions, facts, strategies, project context — anything you'd normally repeat to Claude — and it's queryable in every future session. No servers, no databases, no cloud. Just markdown files with a smart structure that Claude understands.
Do I need Claude Code to use this?
Yes. The Open Brain is designed specifically for Claude Code (Anthropic's CLI tool). The skills, system prompt integration, and query workflow all run through Claude Code. If you're using the web chat or API directly, this isn't the right tool — yet.
How is this different from just using CLAUDE.md?
CLAUDE.md is a single flat file that Claude reads at the start of a session. It's great for project instructions and preferences. But it doesn't scale. The Open Brain is a structured, searchable wiki with separate pages for different topics, automatic tagging, knowledge-graph relationships, and dedicated skills for querying and ingesting. It's the difference between a sticky note and a filing cabinet.
Can my team use the same brain?
Absolutely. The brain lives in your repo. Anyone who clones the repo gets the full brain. Team members can query it, add to it, and benefit from every decision that's been recorded. It's collaborative knowledge — not locked in one person's head.
What about privacy? Where does my data go?
Nowhere. The brain is local markdown files in your repo. Your data stays on your machine (or your team's Git remote). Nothing is sent to any third-party service. The only time data leaves your machine is when Claude processes it — same as any Claude Code session. No extra cloud, no analytics, no tracking.
Do I need technical skills to set this up?
If you can run Claude Code, you can set up the brain. The Starter Kit includes an auto-setup skill that does the heavy lifting. You run /setup-brain, answer a few questions, and it configures everything. The video walkthrough covers the entire process start to finish.
What's the difference between free and the $27 kit?
